We believe the preferencing system is confusing for the voter and undemocratic.
Unfortunately, it is compulsory for every political party to preference every other political party or candidate.
Each Climate Change Coalition candidate had the right to choose his/her own preferences, just as you have the right to choose your own preferences.
We do not believe anyone has the right to tell anyone else how to vote.
If you are concerned about preferencing, you can establish your own order of choice and vote accordingly.
CHOICE IS OUR GREATEST FREEDOM
The Climate Change Coalition was founded on the principle of bringing political parties together to address and inspire leadership on the issues of climate change. We are not divisive or exclusive.
There has been much media debate and discussion about the upcoming election and the issue of preferencing.
We believe the preferencing system is confusing for the voter and essentially undemocratic. However, it is currently part of the political system and we have to comply with the rules.
The CCC made a decision that each candidate should choose their own preferences. We are not a dictatorship. We only urge and inspire people to take up the issues of climate change. But it is important to remember that each voter has the right to choose his/her own preferences.
Climate change is not Liberal or Labor, Greens or Shooters Party, Christian Democrats or Secular Party, climate change is the greatest crisis we have ever been faced with – it is not only an issue of politics, it is a concern that affects everyone on our planet.
Electing a Climate Change Candidate into the Senate will mean that every person who is concerned with climate change, no matter what their political allegiance, can be represented.
While climate change sceptics argue that individuals cannot affect change, they forget that individuals fought for civil rights, freedom of speech and the right for women to vote. And these they won.
Certainly, we have a responsibility to look after our planet for our children; but even if we have no children, we still have a legacy to protect – a selfless belief in a future of a world undiminished and intact.
We should remember we all have only the one short moment of life - we should value it, and the place we inhabit so temporarily. We are responsible for this world, and collectively, we should look after it.
Surely we can look around us and believe we can make a change and we can correct the errors of the past.
We need a political system that can adapt to the issues of our time and plan for our future - a system that allows individuals to take part constructively in the political process.
The Climate Change Coalition is a group of individuals from a range of political, social and religious backgrounds – just like the community we live in.
